The Gritty Cowdog

Australian Cattle Dogs—often called Heelers—are compact, durable, and tough. The right one brings intensity to the work and good sense into the house. At Brushy Creek, we raise full-size Australian Cattle Dogs, generally 17 inches and up, as well as a smaller purebred version that stands around 15 inches. ## Smaller Package Same Cowdog Many of the working Australian Cattle Dogs and Texas Heelers we have known have stood 18 to 20 inches tall—or more. We have raised bigger cowdogs too. Over the years, though, we have intentionally selected smaller-framed dogs, generally in the 15- to 16-inch range, with plenty of bone and the build to do the job. That is why we prefer “fun-sized” over “mini.” These are not fragile little house dogs bred just to be small. They are working-bred cowdogs in a more compact package. A smaller, well-built dog can offer some practical advantages: - **Quickness and agility:** Shorter strides and fast footwork can help a dog change direction quickly when cattle move. - **Efficiency and stamina:** Less body mass can mean less fatigue during fast-paced work in the arena or pasture—much like the smaller horses often valued in the cutting pen. - **A little less target:** When a protective mama cow throws a hoof, a compact cowdog may have a little less of itself in the line of fire. - **Everyday practicality:** They still bring the grit, intelligence, and work ethic we value, while taking up a little less room in the truck and at the foot of the bed. Same cowdog heart. Just a more compact package.
